Virtual DBT Skills Groups for Adults
Many clients combine individual DBT therapy with weekly DBT skills group, as this is the most effective and adherent model of DBT treatment.
DBT Skills Group: A Structured, Supportive Way to Learn Skills That Work
DBT Skills Group is different from most therapy groups because the focus is not on processing personal experiences in depth, but on learning practical skills you can use in everyday life. If you’ve found that talking about your struggles hasn’t been enough to create lasting change, DBT skills group may offer something different.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed for people who experience emotions intensely and want tools to manage overwhelm, impulsive urges, and relationship difficulties more effectively. DBT skills group provides a structured, predictable environment where you can learn these tools step by step, without pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with.
The word dialectical refers to the idea that two opposing things can both be true at the same time. In DBT, this means balancing acceptance and change. We work from the understanding that your emotions, behaviors, and coping strategies make sense given your experiences and that change is possible. DBT skills group is designed to be validating and supportive, while also encouraging growth, accountability, and the development of new coping strategies.
Many participants in DBT skills group struggle with intense emotions, relationship instability, emotional dysregulation, or patterns associated with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Others join because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to manage distress without making things worse. DBT skills group offers a clear framework for understanding these challenges and learning new ways to respond.
What to Expect From DBT Skills Group
DBT skills group meets weekly and follows a consistent, structured format. Each session focuses on teaching specific DBT skills, reviewing homework, and helping participants understand how to apply skills to real-life situations. Because the group is skills-based, it is not a space for processing daily stressors or personal trauma in depth.
DBT skills group is most effective when paired with weekly individual therapy. Individual therapy provides space to process emotions, address personal challenges, and apply DBT skills to your unique circumstances. Individual therapy may be provided by me, if space allows, or by another therapist outside of the practice. This combination allows group sessions to stay focused on skills while individual therapy supports deeper, individualized work.
Participants are asked to commit to DBT skills group for a six-month period. This commitment allows enough time to fully learn, practice, and integrate the skills being taught. DBT skills build on one another, and consistency is an important part of treatment.
